Happy New Year to everyone at the Club, and welcome to any new members.

It’s still the start of the year, but your competition secretary Graham Locke, has been putting together the golfing fixture list for 2008.  In addition to the usual monthly stablefords, medals, and the board competitions, we have also arranged quite a few matches against other Golf Clubs.  I would suggest that anyone who’s not played in one of these before, should try and get involved this year, as it’s a great way to play competitive golf at other courses.

This year we are trying to re-introduce the Saturday morning swindle’s.  Therefore provided there’s no competition, there’ll be an 18 hole stableford most Saturdays, off the yellow tees and with a random draw.  These are likely to start at about 08:30 ish, with each entrant putting £2 into the pot to act as a prize fund.  Anyone can play, men, lady, junior, all you need is a valid handicap. Jamie Bates will be able to let you know when the next is.

When the days get longer and warmer (Probably April time), we’ll start to do a similar thing on a Friday afternoon / evening.  It’ll be the same entry fee, but only over the first nine holes.  This won’t be a random draw since you can play anytime between lunch and dusk.  Just enter either in the shop or at the bar, and the winner will be posted the following morning.

We try to arrange many golfing opportunities throughout the year, but there are a few that I’d especially encourage you to put in your diaries as soon as possible.  These are: the Men’s Supper / Greensome (30th / 31st May), Invitation Day (28th June), Club Championship (12th July), and  Captains Day (16th August).  They are key to having a successful club, and the more people who can attend the better.

Anyway, enjoy your golf during 2008, and if you have queries or suggestions on how we can improve things at Barkway then please feel free to contact me.

Regards,

Pete Francis

Barkway Park Golf Club Newsletter
Ladies Section - July 2008 - Newsletter.

Welcome to our July newsletter, I’m sure you will agree that the course is playing and looking really good at the moment, so thanks goes to Anthony, Carl and Matt for all of their hard work. However, tips and suggestions would be welcome on how to stop the ball on the green.

On Saturday 28th June Invitation Day was held which again was a great success, a thanks goes to Jamie Bates for organising the day.  Carol Tillotson won Ladies longest drive on the 3rd and Pauline Freeman won Ladies nearest the pin on the 15th.  Leslie McKeane and her guest came 3rd overall with 43 points.

Well done to Gina Skutela who has up until now found it a bit daunting playing in competitions, however her efforts have paid off as she came runner up in our June Stableford, it won’t be long before she’s winning too, keep up the good work Gina.

We would like to welcome Sandra Barlow a new lady member, it’s good to see her taking part in our Stableford and Medal competitions.  It would be nice to have more lady members, so if there are any ladies that you know, that would like to learn to play golf or already do so, please try and encourage them to join us. Jamie is available to give lessons and is always willing to offer a complimentary 9 holes for any potential new members.

Thanks to Barkers for hosting a social evening on Friday 11th April, and thanks to Jack Tillotson who organised it. The evening had a good attendance, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, hopefully we can do it again.

As you know Pauline has arranged a Ladies Captain’s weekend away at Lakeside Lodge, on the 27th/28th September. It has proved to be very successful in previous years, and this year there are 18 ladies going, including a few that haven’t been before, so let’s look forward to another good weekend away.

We would like to bring to your attention two important events. These are, The Club Championships on the Saturday 12th July. Any Ladies that haven’t yet entered there is still time to put your name down, the entry sheet is on the notice board in the ladies changing room, and the closing date is Saturday 5th July.

The other event is Captain’s Day, which is on Saturday 16th August.  The entry sheet will be put up soon

on the main notice board in the clubhouse, we hope that as many of you as possible will enter to support Pauline.

Match News & Results.

Friendly Matches

In April we were due to be play against Heydon & Old Nene, unfortunately due to adverse weather conditions these matches had to be cancelled. Results of the other matches played in April, May and June against, Chadwell Springs, Menzies, Bishops Stortford and Great Hadham. Were that Barkway came second in all matches. Thanks go to the ladies who played, better luck next time.

Jean Wilkinson

Despite the valiant effort of the ladies who played in the matches against, St.Ives, Abbottsley,

and Royston, Barkway were runners up. These matches are proving to be very difficult,

as most other clubs have a larger selection of low to mid handicappers to choose from, whereas Barkway is restricted due to the small selection of ladies that we have. Needless to say we will continue to enter knowing that we will win at some stage.

Grace Norman

Menzies – home Sunday 13th April – Barkway came second.

Minutes

1. Captains Report

2. Lady Captains Report

Pauline reported that unfortunately our entry into the Daily Mail Comp. had not been received and we were consequently not in it this year. We had had a bye in the first round of The Mail on Sunday, but sadly lost the next round against Gog Magog 4 ½ - ½ . Ladies Weekend Away was confirmed as 27th/28th September at Lakeside. We are planning to have a Taster Day/Open morning in a drive to encourage more lady golfers – we asked the committee to fund an advert in the local paper (approx £200) – discussion followed and it was generally agreed this was not the best way forward – all thinking of alternative methods for next meeting.

3. Treasurers Report

George stated that the net cash balance at the end of February was £2900 –  consequently confirming the £2000 we had previously mentioned available to fund Club projects this coming year.

4. Competition Secretary

Graham asked if anyone had the information re. the Goddard Cup as the entry had to be in this week. Pete passed it on to him at the end of the meeting.

Finals Day will be on April 13th – would we use referees? – agreed would be good idea – volunteers required.

Congratulations to Ray Smith and Greg Smith for a superb performance in the Mail on Sunday Foursomes at Saffron Walden recently.

 5. 200 Club

George wrote out cheques for winners of Jan. and Feb. draws. Pete to print out info. re. 200 Club to enclose with membership renewals. Mike to contact Tony Terry to find out latest situation re. membership numbers.

 6.Club Projects for 2008

The cost for some of the various suggestions from our previous meetings:-

a)      New flags/poles - £1000
